Book Cover Design – Back Cover

Book Design_Back Cover

Back covers are such an exciting bit of real estate for a book. There is not much that has to be included but so much that can be included.

What must be included:

  • Blurb – This is not a synopsis of the book. The blurb is marketing technique to sell the book. It should be about 100-150 words and be written to entice a potential reader to take your book home. You want to draw people in, not tell them what is going to happen.

Example: A Court of Thorns and Roses

  • Publisher’s Logo – If you are traditionally publishing or starting your own publishing company in order to self-publish, the publisher’s logo will go on the back cover at the bottom (left or right side)
  • ISBN/Barcode – If you are traditionally publishing or self-publishing with the intention of selling in-store, you will need an ISBN/Barcode. This goes on the back cover at the bottom (left or right side). The price is usually included here.

What should be included:

  • Tagline: A tagline appears above the blurb (but sometimes is on the front cover instead). It’s a sensational line that sums up the gist of the story.

  • Artwork – A continuation of your art theme should carry over to the back cover. Otherwise, a plain colored cover will look quite boring.

What can be included:

  • Review – A review or two can from another author or review source like Kirkus can add a dose of credibility to your book and make use of the extra room on your back cover.
  • Other books by author – Images of the next book in a series, all books in a series, or other books by the author can tell readers about other books and entice readers to pick up the books.

  • A note that the book is available as an e-book
  • The author or book website
  • Cover art and designer’s name/s
  • A note that bonus materials are available inside the book and/or list of the bonus materials
